How might we build a dashboard to control funds, trade, manage portfolios and accounts in a clear and user-friendly way?

The redesign included simplifying the steps, improving the visual aspect of the portal, structuring the information in a coherent way, and creating more clarity where necessary.
Problem space

The previous design was not only outdated but difficult to use, filled with usability issues, and made managing investments difficult and complex. There is a steep learning curve for clients to learn how to use the client portal, they spend a long time figuring out how to follow their investments, find their assets breakdown, understand graphs, etc.

Project goals

With the dashboard I'd create, the goals would revolve around the wealth manager who most likely is the main user.

Goal #1 Follow portfolio activities

Goal #2 Manage client/personal investments

Goal #3 Trade

Goal #4 Realize transfers between accounts

Goal #5 Look up reports from previous years

Design audit

There were limitations when it came to the functionalities, as the new design was going to be built onto an existing structure. We had to maintain the same buttons and actions but were able to change the general layout.

Synthesize insights and feature priority

Once we had the context of the product and users we were able to create a list of user problems, where the following points stood out.

  •   Improve menu structure and accessibility
  •   Improve the functionality of the tables
  •   Improve page structure, and organize information in a digestible way
  •   Improve visual clarity

Explore concept designs

I shifted my attention to finding different solutions for the problems we came across. We were able to tackle bigger issues such as the menu structure, as well as minor ones that helped to create more clarity around complicated data. These designs were always made in high definition as they were continuously shared and improved upon in collaboration with other stakeholders.

Testing and feedback

We tested the products internally and with the marketing team, based on the feedback that was given iterations were made.

Iterations:
  •   Buy and sell buttons have been removed from certain pages, to avoid unnecessary clutter
  •   Side menu has been added instead of using a dropdown
  •   Charts have been tested to see which ones fit the user's needs
  •   Changes to the user profile to make it more minimalistic
  •   Added a prominent logout button for safety reasons

Delivery

By modernizing the user interface and adjusting their internal menu structure, we were able to significantly improve the user success rate. After the different explorations, I defined their visual style and designed a user interface that is easier to use and gives a clear overview of the data that is being displayed.

In the examples above you can see a side-by-side of the improvements. Main improvements that have been made are:

  •   Information structure
  •   Navigation
  •   Improvements to the graphs, colours, interaction, etc.
  •   Improvements to the tables, clearer overview
  •   Visual decluttering
